Windermere, Edmonton, AB: Where to go for Fun, Food, and Shopping

Just south of Terwillegar and west of Ellerslie, the community of Windermere is quickly growing into a lovely place to live. In 2009 there were only 322 residents, but that number exploded over 550% in 2012 and it’s population has been continuing to rise!

It’s appealing to Edmonton’s most affluent with some of the largest, most luxurious homes in the city. The area is highly walkable and the freshly paved streets are lined with trees and trails that lead to beautiful parks.

The goal is to create an all-inclusive community where residents can find anything they need and do whatever they want without having to travel far, and Windermere is off to a good start. There are attractions nearby, a community league to be a part of, great restaurants, events, and more.

Attractions in Windermere

Movie Theatre

With gorgeous, multimillion-dollar homes being the norm, it makes sense that the only VIP movie theatre in Edmonton is in Windermere. What is VIP? For just $5 more than a regular ticket, you can reserve your high-backed, leather seat in advance and once you get there, you don’t have to wait in those crazy lines to get your snacks. VIP’s get in-seat service of not only popcorn, pop, and candy, but also their VIP menu. Nosh on artisanal cheese and meats, poutine, or bruschetta, and order wines and cocktails to wash them down.

Treat yourself to VIP at the Windermere Cineplex Odeon on a Wednesday for Hump Date where you get two tickets and two entrees for $50! Learn more or purchase tickets online here.

Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre

The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre (TCRC) is a great spot to spend the day with your family, friends, or even to hang out by yourself. The pool is one of the best in Edmonton. It has a hot tub, steam room, wave pool, a big slide, a diving platform, a big shallow area to relax in and keep an eye on the kids, and one of those fun, circular mazes with jets that make it feel like a ride.

The fitness area is fully stocked with cardio machines, weight equipment, and a triangular-shaped indoor track. There’s also a kids’ zone with a play area and child-minding services so you can get into your workout without having to look after the little ones.

The TCRC also offers a wide variety of programs: skating, basketball, spin, Pilates, and yoga. There are also Zumba and Bollyrobics, which are fun for when you need to work out, but you actually just feel like dancing.

Restaurants in Windermere

XIX Nineteen

XIX Nineteen is something to brag about. It’s one of those restaurants where you don’t simply go to eat, you go to have a dining experience.

The award-winning, classically trained chef, Andrew Fung, has created a menu that reflects both his European and Canadian West Coast influences and could be described as French Japanese fusion. There’s Spicy Miso Albacore Tuna Tartar and White Rock Dungeness Crab Cakes inspired by the West Coast, and lamb, duck, and beef dishes inspired by European tastes.

Yelp lists it as a “great place to go for dates and special occasions, and people are giving it rave reviews like this one:

“The Dungeness crab cakes ($18) were absolutely delicious. The salsa served with them was out of this world. My SO had a half salad with ahi tuna ($13) and he said it was the best salad he’s ever had in a restaurant.”  – Bonnie A. via Yelp

Brown’s Social House

Brown’s Social House is Windermere’s answer to casual dining or meeting up with friends for Sunday brunch or drinks while watching sports. Their menu is what we’ve come to define as “Canadian” cuisine that includes dynamite rolls, fish and chips, pizzas, burgers, and of course yam fries.

Also on the menu are a couple unique additions: instead of fries on the side, you can get cabbage and goat cheese or a cowgirl salad, which are both very popular.

They definitely have some fans on Yelp, but don’t take their word for it, find out what it’s like yourself!

Just across the Henday is the Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market, which runs from mid-May until the week of Thanksgiving from 4 – 7:30 p.m. In 2015, there were over 60 vendors, which included farmers’ market staples like produce, meats, baked goods, and honey. This market also serves up ready-made meals, food trucks, local wines, alpaca fur apparel, cloth diapers, jewelry, and dog treats for your furry companions.

You can also take in performances by buskers while you’re filling your reusable bags full of local goodies. So leave your Wednesday nights open this summer and tell your friends to meet you there!
